Museo del Mar
Museo del Mar is unique, full
of thousands of seashells and starfish, many from Uruguay, but also from Africa
and other exotic places. There
is a special room, very poetic, dedicated
to pirate paraphernalia from Uruguay's pirating era.
The
museum houses a large collection of preserved seabirds and sea animals
as well as a huge skeleton of a whale. (None of the specimens were
killed, they were all found.) In addition there are two large
tanks containing starfish of every size and shape, some as small as
buttons. Conveniently located across La Barra bridge from Punta
del Este, it is a delight to visit, especially on a rainy afternoon.
