General Information

Official Name:  La "República Oriental del Uruguay" (the Eastern Republic of Uruguay – the “eastern” refers to the country’s location east of the Uruguay river.)

Uruguay” is roughly translated as “River of the Painted Birds.”

Population:  2.8 million people

Capital:  Montevideo

Size:  Slightly smaller than the state of Washington (68,038 square miles)

Primary language:  Spanish.  English is most often selected as a second language in Uruguay, especially in the business sectors.

Currency:  Uruguayan Peso (UrP)  The peso is divided into 100 Centisimos.

Time Zone:  GMT – 3  (three hours later than Eastern Standard time, when no daylight savings; Uruguay's daylight savings change is different than the US, so there will be a one to two hour variance during daylight savings periods.)

Location: Southern Subtropical Zone, Southeastern coast of South America between Argentina and Brazil Between the 30th and 35th degree of southern latitude and the 53th and 58th degree of western longitude.

Flag:  Four azure blue horizontal stripes on a white background with a white square in the upper hoist-side corner with a yellow sun bearing a human face known as the Sun of May and 16 rays alternately triangular and wavy.  The Sun of May represents Uruguay’s independence.

National Motto:  Libertad o Muerte  (Liberty or Death)
